No investigation over abuse allegations - Gravesend Messenger

15th Jan 2009 | in Kendall House Child Abuse News

The owners of a children’s home in the midst of claims of abuse and malpractice will not be carrying out an investigation.

The Diocese of Rochester has said it will not be looking into claims made in a national newspaper that residents of Kendall House, Gravesend, who were allegedly drugged at the home in the late 1970s and early 1980s are giving birth to children with disabilities and health problems.

Former resident Teresa Cooper, claims she has spoken to a number of women who were placed in its care who claim to have been abused and now have children with disabilities.

Two months ago, North Kent police confirmed it was no longer investigating her claims. Now the Diocese of Rochester says it is not in a position to look into the claims.

A spokesman said: “We understand that various allegations have historically been brought to the attention of the police and social services.

“To date, none of these bodies have sought to investigate the matter with the Diocese of Rochester.

“The Diocese of Rochester is unable to discuss individual circumstances for legal reasons.

“However, if the police, social services or appropriate legal body initiates an investigation, the Diocese will cooperate fully with them.”

She added it would not be appropriate for the body to comment as it is not qualified to do so.

North Kent Police said it would not comment on the latest reports.

The Social Services, Kent Police, Staff who took part and all those involved should not be exempt from their part in the serious failures to protect children.

They should all be held accountable

I fully agree an investigation would help undercover the truth.

All professionals who are being paid from the public purse must be made accountable for their actions, it is simply disgraceful.

its disgraceful,so all us girls including teresa and myself are liars then,so we obviously dont deserve any recognition or apologies for what we had to go through being forceably drugged and abused thats ruined our lifes and damaged our childrens,so that doesent matter then!.all we want is the rightfull justice we all deserve, not to be swept under the what is it going to take to be listened to.

Teresa have you contacted your local and county councillors and MP?

Or have you tried to get an appointment with the Leader of KCC to discuss this.

The public are allowed to put questions to the local authority at full council , normally the papers are also there.

All elected members are also Corporate Parents who are supposed ensure that children in care are looked after as if they were their own.

My MP Eric Pickles has totaly ignored the KH abuse and refuses to talk to me or respond to any of my emails. They sent me a letter after years refusing to deal with it and told me to put it in writing. If they want it in writing they should buy my book.
He is the only MP that has ignored it which is shocking. He should be forced to resign

Yes the head of KCC done a report into the missing files which I recieved after they messed me around and the report is shocking and extremely short but it reflects on them badly as well as the church. I had a meeting arranged for last week but I decided not to attend because the child protection leader wasnt going to attend and given her definate failings she should of been there so she could be questioned over what she put in the report. She too ought to be sacked.

The way Kent Police have handled it is shocking and I will be addressing their serious failures and the appauling way they have treated me and others

Its a case of one serious failure after another and all those including the KH staff should be held fully accountable for their actions

The staff who hide behind “we were told to do it” is utter crap and they took part by choice and were fully aware of the media exposing it was wrong as they all worked at KH when it came out in the media in 1979 and 80. They took part in crimes to children and the Nazi war criminals were not able to hide behind “we were told to do it” and the KH staff should be made fully accountable for the serious abuse of children.

    Hi Teresa

If Eric Pickles MP doesnt help you could ask another (any) maybe John Hemming MP to ask permission to help instead. If a MP refuses to help this is a way round it to seek help from another.

I am surprised at Eric as he was also appeared to be working to open the secret family courts (maybe he is to close for comfort to Kent or their connection which spread far and wide)

It maybe best to arrange another meeting with the leader kcc and take another MP (from outside of Kent)who is supportive and will insist on the people responsible being present.

    Hi Everybody
May I just say you are all extremely strong to be fighting such a hard battle,
I have the up most respect for the ladies who suffered this horrendous abuse at KH and are now trying to get some kind of justice.
I cannot offer any advice however I can tell you that everybody who has read your book Teresa weather they have been abused or not will be supporting you 100%.
Keep strong these cowards will have to cave one way or another!

    Hi Veronica

Thankyou for your support and for reading my book. I know my book is not easy for those who read it as much as it wasnt easy to write it but if it makes a difference and helps towards a positive change, gives those who are unable to have a voice now because they are sadly not with us any longer then it has achieved something.

As children we have no say in what happens to us but as adults we can use our experiences to help others and to hopefully get justice. It is never an easy route but it is a route thats easier than not saying anything at all because silence is not always golden. We still have to live with it regardless and what is harder, living with it alone or living with it and sharing it be it with those we dont know but who understand or those who have shared that experience with us? A problem shared is a problem halved, thats what my dad always used to tell me despite his mistakes. He had some very good things to tell me in amongst the chaos.

I really apreciate your post, it means alot to me and I am certain it means alot to the other KH girls and their families who at this moment in time are probably trying to make some sense of it all.

Thankyou so much for your support

Yes they are cowards and whats worst is the staff are even less than cowards because they will not stand up and have a say and they didnt protect us back then and even now they still fail to speak up or if they do (like two I know in particular both living in Gravesend Kent who went out of their way to lie not only to me but also to to the police because all they cared for is themselves) but my dad always told me, lies always come back to haunt you and I am certain it will in this situation too.

Were these staff members really the right people to be caring for any child? The answer is no.

    Teresa xxxxx
