Kendall House Abuse - Teresa Cooper - Public Enquiry Called For

6th Apr 2009 | in Kendall House Child Abuse News

Conservative MP Tim Loughton calls for a Police enquiry but we welcome a call for a Public enquiry in order to show the full horrors of Kendall House

Kent Police should be under fire for the way many see as a mishandling of the Kendall House abuse.

A Public enquiry was refused in 1980 and was again refused by the DCSF in 2009 despite public call for it to be investigated

    Hello Teresa
I’ve just seen you and your story on the news and will be watching newsnight for the full story tonight.  And of course will be letting everyone else know all day today…
I sooo hope that this is your time to be heard and hope that now all the other horrors come out and the people involved are brought to justice.  Keep banging the drum now you’re on a roll.
Be proud of what you’ve achieved so far for yourself and the other girls who no longer have a voice!!
Love and best wishes, Karen & Andy xx

Well done i think a public enquiry should be demanded and i will campaign for this you have worked so hard and child abuse in any form should never be tolerated it is even worse when child abuse occurs by the very people who were supposed to protect children.
I demand a public enquiry and demand that those involved are held accountable and not protected by anonyimity

At last Teresa, following this bbc coverage, you and your children and other careleavers and their children have some chance of justice. Your book has been out a long time now for all to read.  There are so many unanswered questions. I agree a public inquiry is called for - to investigate what actually happened but also to investigate the inaction of a number of agencies in seeking justice for children and in targeting the perpetrators at every level of involvement.

I was a student at Kent University in the 70s and raised the issue of the use of the liquid cosh in psychiatric institutions but got nowhere.

Some consultant psychiatrists have a lot to answer for.

All power to your campaign for a public enquiry.

Teresa, well done on this coverage, it is not before time. I hope Tim Laughton keeps up the pressure and that the Department of Health organises a proper inquiry. If the diocese is open to an inquiry as they say then they themselves could ask for one. I wish you all the best.

I would like to say thankyou to Tim Loughton for his support and for wanting a police enquiry grin

Sadly Kent Police’s attitude to date leaves me with no confidence in them at all.

Because of the nature of the abuse, the severe misuse of drugs and the birth defects which is not at all covered by any other enquiry ever conducted by the government shows there is a need for a Public enquiry.

Many children currently in care are put into adult mental health hospitals because social workers dont know where to put them or have no placements elsewhere so they put them into mental or secure institutions when these children are not mentally ill. These children have no voice because like the Kendall House girls, they too are behind closed doors.

The government needs to address these issues because these drugs may well continue to affect not only our children but also our grandchildren.

Without some form of an enquiry we will never know just how far this goes.

Women and teenage girls have a right to know the long term affects of these drugs and we are dont know if its because we were overdosed or if this is a wider problem on normal doses too.

Hello again Teresa - today’s coverage has been really widespread - brilliant - every 15 minutes!!  Your daughter Sarah is really brave too for speaking on the TV.

I do hope that the Kendall House monsters (the ones who are still alive) aren’t going to be able to hide behind the now-dead psychiatrist when the enquiry is carried out.

They need to be publicly held to account as every adult knows what’s right and this was so wrong, especially when they were in the trusted position of looking after vulnerable children - disgusting and unforgiveable behaviour.

Are you able to mention this website when being interviewed on the news?  Then people would be able to research more and realise the real awful truth behind this current story.

Take care, keep up the publicity and the fight for what’s right.

    Karen P xx

Hi Teresa, glad to see your campaign is growing more stronger as time goes on.

I watched the report on Meridian TV 6pm slot and saw that they have shown the wrong house. They showed the nursing home further down the road instead of The Doris Law Centre. If you remember when I was helping you with some of the background research of that place, I too fell into the same mind set and sent you photos of the same building that Meridian showed. Then after we had a chat about it I was able to track down the correct house and send you the photos, that you included in your book.

I haven’t seen the news report on the main ITV channel so don’t know what they showed, but have contacted Meridian TV and let them know of their mistake. Just waiting to see if they contact me or you.

    Take care
    John Lord at Gravesend.

Hey Theresa, read your story in Take a Break.  Keep up the good work, too many things are ‘swept under the carpet’.
Also, remember you are not a victim you are a survivor.
